COLD/COUGH MEDICINES CAN KILL BABIES
Over-the-Counter
Cold and Cough Medicines Can Kill Babies:
During
this time of year when many children and adults are sick with colds and
coughs, the CDC has come out with a startling report. More than 1,500
toddlers and babies wound up in emergency rooms over a two-year period
and three died because of bad reactions to cold or cough medicine,
federal health officials reported Thursday.
The U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention warned parents not to give common
over-the-counter cold remedies to children under 2 years old without
consulting a doctor.
Parents of small children with coughs and
colds frequently give medicine to alleviate their symptoms and make
them more comfortable. But doctors and the CDC are warning that this
can be more dangerous than just letting the cold run its course. There
are no dosing instructions for cough or cold medicines for children
under the age of two.
Dr. Michael Shannon, chief of emergency
medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, said it's common, especially in
the winter, to see emergency room cases of toddlers given cough or cold
medicine.
So what do parents do to help their children avoid or
colds, coughs and flu during the cold and flu season? Conducting
interviews on this topic is author and eating coach Christy Wade.
